What Drives the Gold Price?

Three forces move the gold price every trading day — read the full breakdown in our guide.

Real interest rates

Gold pays no interest. When real yields on bonds fall, holding gold becomes relatively more attractive — and vice versa.

The U.S. dollar

Gold is priced in dollars worldwide. A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for foreign buyers, typically lifting demand and price.

Safe-haven demand

Geopolitical tension, banking stress and inflation fears push investors toward gold as a store of value.

Gold Price FAQ

Quick answers about today's gold price and how spot pricing works.

What is the gold price today?
The live spot price is shown at the top of this page, per troy ounce, gram or kilogram in your chosen currency. Spot prices change continuously during global trading hours, which run nearly 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon (New York time).
How much is a gram of gold?
One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, so the gram price is the ounce price divided by 31.1035. Switch the unit toggle above to Gram to see it instantly in your selected currency.
Why is the jewelry store price higher than spot?
Dealers and jewelers add a premium over the spot price to cover refining, fabrication, distribution and margin. Collectible coins and small bars usually carry higher premiums than large bars.
What is "spot gold" exactly?
Spot gold is the price for immediate settlement of one troy ounce of physical bullion. It is the benchmark that gold futures, ETFs and dealer quotes are all priced against.
